Black Lion Audio

What needs attention in your rack: the sound or the connections? Chicago’s Black Lion Audio covers both, with mic preamps, compressors and the hardware that keeps a studio connected. We’ve got Auteur preamps, Bluey compression and PBR patching options, alongside conversion and power conditioning (the back of the rack deserves some attention too). Choose the next addition around how you record, route and mix.

Black Lion Audio began by modifying existing equipment before developing its own designs. That background comes through in Bluey, created with Chris Lord-Alge after the team examined his modified blue-stripe 1176. Years of repairs and component changes had given that particular unit its character. Black Lion recreated it with custom CineMag transformers and added a wet/dry control for parallel compression.

More channels or easier routing? Our collection includes the Auteur Quad2 preamp and Revolution EXP, which adds eight analogue inputs and eight outputs to a compatible ADAT setup. PBR TRS and XLR patchbays bring connections within reach, while PG-1 Type UK mkII power conditioning covers another part of the rack. Check connector types and channel counts against the equipment you already use before planning the wiring.

Rackmount or modular? Bluey also comes in a 500 series format, taking up two slots, while the PBR-8 provides a chassis option for a modular setup. There’s scope to add processing and reorganise the connections around it.
