The Coles 4038’s figure-of-eight pattern captures sound from the front and rear, making placement part of the tone (the room gets a channel, whether you planned it or not). The 4038 began as a BBC design in the 1950s, developed further and manufactured by STC before production and patents transferred to Coles in 1972. Its familiar shape houses a design that remains faithful to the original specification, with each microphone still built by hand. That broadcast heritage became a recording staple, including drum sessions at Abbey Road.

Single ribbon or stereo pair? Our collection includes the 4038, 4030L and 4050, alongside 4038 matched pairs and the 4050 Stereo. The supporting microphone accessories include XLR adaptors, anti-vibration mounts and a dedicated 4038 stereo mount. Pair the microphone with suitable mic preamps, allowing enough gain for quieter sources.
