DPA’s microphones grew out of measurement instruments, which explains why they sound like nothing at all, in the best possible way. Ole Brøsted Sørensen and Morten Støve left Brüel & Kjær to found DPA in Denmark in 1992 and took over B&K’s studio range, the 4006 and 4011 among them. We’ve got small-diaphragm condensers, stereo pairs and instrument mics coming through.

The 4006 is the omni, the 4011A the cardioid and the ST4011A a matched stereo pair, while the 4015 widens the cardioid and B&K-badged pairs such as the 4007 still turn up (one 4006 even went to Mars on NASA’s Perseverance rover). The compact 2011, 2012 and 4090 sit alongside, the 2017 is a shotgun, the 4055 is made for kick drum and the 4099 clips onto instruments.
