sE Electronics

Siwei Zou trained as a classical musician at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music before he started building microphones, and sE Electronics still makes its capsules by hand in its own Shanghai factory. Since 2000 that’s given us the sE2200a, the Z5600A valve mic, the Voodoo ribbons and a run of mics designed with Rupert Neve. We’ve got condensers, ribbons and spare capsules coming through.

The Rupert Neve collaboration started with the RNR1, an active ribbon pairing an sE transducer with Neve-designed electronics, then added the RN17 small-diaphragm condenser, sold here in cardioid and omni pairs and as spare heads, and the RNT valve mic. The rest of the condenser range runs from the sE2200a and the Titan to the twin-valve Gemini and Gemini II, the G3500, the sE5 pair and the Z5600A and Z5600A II.

Ribbons are where sE gets adventurous. The passive Voodoo VR1 and active VR2 reach further into the top end than a classic ribbon, the R1 is the straightforward figure-of-eight, and the RT1 adds a valve. The DM1 Dynamite inline preamp gives passive ribbons and dynamics more level, and the Munro Egg 150 monitors were designed with Andy Munro (yes, sE makes speakers too).
