Start with the source. British brand Sontronics makes ribbon microphones and condenser microphones for everything from a close vocal to a full ensemble. Our collection includes Mercury valve condensers, Sigma 2 ribbons and the Apollo 2 stereo ribbon, alongside dedicated instrument designs. Choose around the sound, the room and the recording distance (the microphone’s looks can come second).
Sontronics launched its first microphone range at the NAMM Show in 2005, including the Orpheus, STC-1 and STC-2. Its range has since grown to cover valve condensers, active ribbons and microphones designed around particular instruments.
One source or a stereo picture? Mercury offers variable polar patterns for adjusting pickup around the microphone, while Apollo 2 captures stereo with a ribbon design. Sigma 2 provides a mono ribbon option, and both models require phantom power from compatible mic preamps. For kick drum, the DM-1B takes a different approach: a dedicated condenser with an end-address capsule. Our collection also includes Aria 2, Saturn 2 and Delta 2, giving you several starting points for your next session.
