Akai’s samplers are the reason so many records from the late 80s and 90s sound the way they do. The S612 started the line in 1985, the S900 and S1000 became studio fixtures, and the MPC turned sampling into something you played with your fingers. We’ve got S-series samplers, MPCs, the VX90 synth, the XR10 drum machine and the MFC42 filter coming through.

The S900’s 12-bit grit is still the sound a lot of producers chase, and the S1000HD and S5000 take the format further. The MPC2000XL and MPC2000XL SE2 are the beat machines, the EB16 is an effects board for Akai’s samplers, the VX90 is a rack analogue synth and the MFC42 an analogue filter (turn the resonance up and stand back).
